Trader Joe's is a neighborhood grocery store with amazing food and drink from around the globe and around the corner. Yet a quick stroll down the grains aisle will quickly yield to a few raised eyebrows. The problem? Most grains are contained in a clear plastic bags. Not only is it easy to spill if torn too wide, but also spoils quickly if not consumed in a timely manner. Also, who here is a fan of rice weevils? No one? I thought so.

The creative objective was to revamp the Trader Joe’s grains packaging to not only improve aesthetics but also facilitate with dispensing and measuring. A QR code on the bottom of the container also guides you through an array of quick and delicious rice recipes.

The new and improved packaging is shaped in a cylindrical tube. Different grain mixtures are color coordinated for ease of distinction. A clear lining along the tube indicates at a quick glance how much rice is left in the container. Clear cooking instructions are labeled in the back.

Sturdy and light-weight, the dispensing unit is composed of repurposed bamboo. Measuring units are located inside the lid. The container can be washed and re-used.
